Success Stories: Circadian Case Studies

Chevron
Implemented comprehensive fatigue management and shiftwork health and safety programs in several refineries, including schedule optimization, training and educational support publications, control room design, sleep disorder screening and treatment, benchmarking studies and best practices.

Pfizer
Facilitated conversion of large pharmaceutical plant to seamless 7-day production, requiring over 20 specialized shift schedule designs to optimize production in each business unit.

Canadian National Rail
Designed software and database program that maximized operational efficiency, minimized crew costs, and improved operational performance in freight rail operations. Program achieved 99% accuracy in matching crew to trains, while reducing employee fatigue and improving employee lifestyles by increasing predictability of work assignments.

Kraft Foods
Conducted in-depth operations assessment to detail financial impact and increased incidence levels of employee performance, safety, and health issues linked directly to shift schedules and shiftwork management practices.

Schlumberger
Developed custom alertness assurance training program on “Managing a Schlumberger Lifestyle” that has been implemented worldwide to over 14,000 wireline and testing personnel, with reportedly substantial improvements in health, safety, and operating efficiency.

International Paper
Facilitated shift schedule optimization process and conducted lifestyle training workshops that generated an annual 3:1 ROI and became the corporate model for paper mill scheduling.

Dupré Logistics
At recommendation of insurance provider, conducted fatigue risk assessment & accident investigation, provided employee, supervisor & dispatcher training, and utilized prediction software model to generate monthly schedule management reports. Decreased roll-over rate by over 90% and decreased average accident cost from $14,100 to $4,800, enabling company to negotiate lower insurance premiums and better compete for new business based on their safety record.

DuPont
Helped resolve divisive scheduling issues in UK chemical plant by facilitating a joint labor-management change initiative that transferred ownership of the new work schedule to the plant operators.

National Grid
Conducted comprehensive fatigue and operational risk assessment relative to impending regulations on fatigue management for gas control operators. This identified the need to unify the shift schedule structure for the Northeast System Control Centers, which was developed and facilitated by Circadian to both support operational needs and employee preferences, while minimizing fatigue. These results were then reinforced and maximized with a special fatigue management training program for managers, supervisors and operators.

Air Liquide
Implemented a comprehensive Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS). The implementation included an assessment of driver schedules for fatigue and modification of the schedules to minimize fatigue risk.  Other components of the FRMS included driver fatigue training, sleep disorder screening and treatment, ongoing fatigue assessment and optimization of driver schedules, and educational support publications.

Siemens
Conducted a major training initiative for Medical Products Division that included a Train-the-Trainer program on fatigue management, Working Nights newsletter subscriptions and conducting Managing a Shiftwork Lifestyle sessions at eight regional locations.

District of Columbia Water & Sewer Authority (DCWASA)
Facilitated staffing and scheduling optimization programs at world's largest advanced wastewater treatment facility. Also, helped to improve construction, maintenance, and customer service operations by realigning manpower requirements with variable workload demand.

Eli Lilly
Developed workplace design, training, and scheduling protocols for two start-up plants in the United States, and facilitated scheduling optimization programs for three international facilities.

Unilever
Helped facilitate successful expansion from 5 to 7-day continuous production operations in four personal care products plants in the U.S. and U.K. as part of Unilever's global manufacturing productivity initiative.

Barrick Gold
Conducted numerous consulting projects at remote mine sites throughout the world, most notably in Africa and South America. Analyzed and implemented solutions on work practices, policies, shift schedules, environmental factors, living conditions and cultural issues on domestic and expatriated employees. Solutions improved performance, safety, health, family life and the overall operational effectiveness of the mines.

ConAgra
Partnered with divisional and corporate personnel on several broad initiatives to over 20 site locations. Conducted an in depth study across the entire company’s Supply Chain operations group to identify and quantify which human factors trends and causal relationships were having the greatest impact on operational performance. Noteworthy at one facility was helping to break a six-month impasse on a new contract through management seminars, scheduling consultations, and union workshops. This enabled facilitation of the alternative work schedule needed to achieve continuous, 24/7 production.

Austin-Travis County (Texas) Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Partnered with the paramedics and EMS management to fully analyze the impact of 24 hour shift schedules on personnel and agency effectiveness. Facilitated a cooperative effort between all stake holders to implement physiologically sound schedules based on a matrix of factors including public service requirements, safety issues, station activity level and personal preferences/lifestyle needs of the paramedics.

Caterpillar / BHP Billiton
Circadian’s research department evaluated existing fatigue monitoring technologies for mining operations in conjunction with Caterpillar and BHP Billiton. Results for both existing and emerging technologies were published in “Operator Fatigue – Detection Technology Review”, Caterpillar 2007. Additional assignments for Caterpillar included shift scheduling optimization for several component manufacturing plants, and the development of the Managing a Mining Lifestyle Training Program that has been provided to heavy equipment operators at mining companies worldwide.

Duke Energy
Facilitated scheduling optimization programs to help Duke Energy’s fleet of Nuclear Power Station operators and security force comply with new NRC regulation change 10 CFR Part 26 Fitness-for-Duty Programs, requiring the development of fatigue management programs, including training and scheduling of work hours to improve safety.
